How do I contact the IRS?

Answer:
The easiest way to contact the Internal Revenue Service is
to visit their official website at http://www.irs.gov and find specific email addresses, phone numbers or online submission forms which address your particular issue. If you do not have Internet access, you can also contact the IRS by finding a listing for the Internal Revenue Service under "US Government" in a phonebook.

Sometimes a letter or form delivered from the IRS to a taxpayer will contain contact information, either in the letterhead or body of the letter.  This information may be more useful than the general contact information provided in the phonebook.  There may be a number of ways to access a menu of recorded tax topics or an automated tax refund status service, but sometimes it may be necessary to contact a live human IRS representative to discuss a legal or personal tax matter.  This is where the IRS' official website can help tremendously.  There should be a listing of local IRS offices organized by state, and those local offices should be able to provide a direct contact number for one-on-one discussions with an IRS agent.
