What is Harassment?

Answer:
Harassment is behavior that one finds annoying, bothersome or even tormenting.
When used in the legal arena it refers to a specific threshold of behavior that a person finds threatening or disturbing. Various types of harassment with a legal aspect include racial, sexual or religious harassment which focus on protected categories; psychological harassment, bullying or stalking and hazing.

Over the last 20 years, more attention has been given to creating workplaces and schools that are free of harassment. Employees and employers are entitled to be free from not only direct harassment but an atmosphere of harassment, especially free of sexual content or violence. Schools are also to be free of these issues, although hazing and bullying may be more common. Proving criminal harassment can be difficult, especially when they happen away from the view of others. Documenting encounters, including saving emails, messages, or making notes of dates, times and locations of in-person encounters can help police in stopping and prosecuting harassers.
