What is Divorce?

Answer:
Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage.
Different from an annulment, which is a legal procedure that erases the existence of a marriage, divorce changes the marital status of the two individuals and allows them to pursue other marriage partners.

Some countries do not allow divorce, while others have strict requirements for allowing them. In the US, it is fairly easy in most states to obtain a divorce, but there are additional complicating issues. These subsequent issues may include spousal and child support, custody of children, and the distribution of marital assets.

In the US, collaborative divorce and mediated divorce are becoming popular alternatives to contentious court proceedings. In these two processes, trained attorneys or mediators help the divorcing couple work out a mutually beneficial agreement. This tends to be a more empowering and amicable process than the adversarial court alternative.
