When you are in need of a business attorney, it is very important to find an attorney who specializes in working with business clients, and has a good reputation.  It is advisable to hire an attorney who has a significant amount of successful experience working with clients in your particular industry. 

You can ask friends and family members for recommendations of lawyers, but make sure to tell them you are looking for an attorney to represent your business.  The attorney who handled your cousin’s divorce probably specializes in divorce law, and is not likely to be the best choice to represent your business.

In addition to Chamber of Commerce involvement, law firms that specialize in working with clients in a particular industry tend to become involved with trade associations relevant to that industry.  Take a look at the membership roster of a professional association related to your industry and you will probably find the names a few attorneys who have the type of experience you need.

For example, attorneys who specialize in real estate law tend to join state and local real estate real estate associations and councils.  Attorneys who specialize in human resources law are likely to be members of the local Society for Human Resource chapter in your area. 

Another excellent source for identifying local attorneys with specific specialties is your state’s Bar Association.  In every state, attorneys must pass the Bar exam in order to be licensed to practice.  Do an online search to find the website for the Bar Association in your state, and you will be connected to a comprehensive source of information about attorneys in your state.
