What is Discrimination?

Answer:
Discrimination is the act of treating a person or group of people in a different fashion than another, generally
based on a prejudice about a characteristic that person or people have such as age or race. Unlawful discrimination includes harassment, hiring practices, promotion practices, admissions to educational institutions, housing and other activities that are conducted based on a protected class status.

Those protected classes include: age, gender, race, color, religion, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation and disability. If a person feels that they are being unlawfully discriminated against, they should document each instance in writing, including requests for accommodation, promotion, or whatever the situation is. This will be helpful if legal action needs to be taken as the burden of proof is on the plaintiff.
