Top Law & Taxes QandAs

What does an Accountant do?

Answer:
Accountants do more than just prepare tax returns or offer tax advice.  Accountants also prepare financial statements and assist with long term financial planning for both individuals and businesses.  They manage the systems that track income, assets, expenditures and debt, and they are often the “go-to” person for companies wanting to expand their business operations or borrow money.

How do I contact the IRS?

Answer:
The easiest way to contact the Internal Revenue Service is to visit their official website at http://www.irs.gov and find specific email addresses, phone numbers or online submission forms which address your particular issue. If you do not have Internet access, you can also contact the IRS by finding a listing for the Internal Revenue Service under "US Government" in a phonebook.

Where can I get free tax help?

Answer:
It’s tax time again. Did you know that it is possible to get free tax assistance in filing those forms?

There are a number of IRS sanctioned free resources available for general tax counsel including assistance in filing for income tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) has certified volunteers to help folks with low to moderate income (usually $39,000 or below) prepare and file their tax returns. VITA also has a partnership with the Armed Forces Tax Council (AFTC) to help military families with filing their taxes. Call 1-800-829-1040 to locate the VITA or AFTC Program near you.
